The Butterfly & Hydrangeas

The Butterfly and Hydrangeas artwork is the last of the three symbolism illustrations I worked on in the second half of last year.

The symbolism behind this artwork is far more simple that the other two in this series.

Both Butterflies and Hydrangeas represent grace and beauty.

Sometimes there is no need to over-complicate things, simple and colourful is all that is needed.

The Making Of The Butterfly & Hydrangeas

As usual, I started by creating a rough copy to make sure I was happy with the line work.

This stage is so important, most of the detail and texture comes from the ink lines.

The (slightly crumpled) rough ink draft.

Once I’m completely happy with the rough version I start to transfer it over to the high quality (and much more expensive) paper I use for the final artwork.

The line work is always the most relaxing part of any artwork for me. I get completely absorbed by it and hours fly by unnoticed. It’s almost like a meditation.

And then it’s time to add plenty of rich colour…
